Lady Lazarus, Sylvia Plath And The Art Of Dying Essay As an artist myself, a form of art such as painting or drawing comes assumedly natural. It has been something Ive always excelled in to an extent, my calling perhaps, or my forte, as any passionate writer would say about writing , or a painter of painting. A work of art can be something that can come from an artists emotion whether it be pure elation or absolute anguish, human emotion comes natural to us humans, as does art to artists in most cases. In the selected passage (lines 42-51) of Sylvia Plaths Lady Lazarus, Plath describes dying as something that comes natural to her, an artform she excels in, her calling. In the first two lines Plath states that dying is a form of art and clearly lets the reader know she has had more than one encounter with death. Earlier on in the poem Plath compares herself to a cat with nine lives to let the reader know that at this was written at the time of her third encounter with death. She almost boasts of her knowledge in the subject of death, letting the reader know how much experience shes had in the area already. In lines 47-48, I do it so it feels like hell.. I do it so it feels real , Plath implies that her attempts at suicide could serve as replacement for a lack of emotion or to mask intense pain. Plaths words are so personal that in reading one cannot help but almost feel her exquisite agony or the agony she might have felt in lacking emotion. I guess you could say Ive a call , in this line Plath makes it obvious to the reader she believes dying is her fate, she gives the feeling that she believes it to her strong point, something she excels in, or, her forte. This idea is highly ironic because one would think the art or dying is the last subject a person would want to excel in. While Plath states dying might be her calling she doesnt necessarily sound thrilled about the idea, but approaches the idea with a more sarcastic tone, while at the same time accepting the idea of dying whole heartedly. In lines 49-51 Plath goes on to let the reader know how easy the art of dying comes to her, she belittles the endeavors of dying, telling the reader how simple she believes the task is to complete. The reader already assumes Plath has attempted suicide on more than one occasion and in the last line of the passage (51) Plath compares dying to the art of acting, a different form of art, also possibly eluding to some glamour that appeals to her in the idea of dying. This also suggests how important dying might have become to her, like any personal work of art is to the artist who created it. In reading this poem I couldnt help but feel Plaths unadulturated wish to die and feel nothing but utter sorrow for her, however, Plath wants the reader how well rounded she is in the art of dying, how easy it is for her, as if she a painter and death, her paint. Plath wants the reader to know she considers death a form of art, and herself a very talented artist in that aspect, death is as simple as writing is for a writer. It is as if shes telling the reader she can go at anytime, its just that easy for her, this to her, is her calling.

Nebraska Man - An Evolution Hoax The Theory of Evolution has always been a controversial topic, and continues to be in modern times as well. While scientists clamor to find the missing link or the bones of ancient human ancestors to add to the fossil record and collect even more data to back up their ideas, others have tried to take matters into their own hands and create fossils they claim are the missing link of human evolution. Most notably, Piltdown Man had the scientific community talking for 40 years before it was finally definitively debunked. Another discovery of the missing link that turned out to be a hoax was called Nebraska Man. Maybe the word hoax is a bit harsh to use in the case of Nebraska Man, because it was more of a case of mistaken identity than an all out fraud like the Piltdown Man turned out to be. In 1917, a farmer and part time geologist named Harold Cook who lived in Nebraska found a single tooth that looked remarkably similar to an ape or a human molar. About five years later, he sent it to be examined by Henry Osborn at Columbia University. Osborn excitedly declared this fossil to be a tooth from the first ever discovered ape-like man in North America. The single tooth grew in popularity and throughout the world and it wasnt long before a drawing of the Nebraska Man showed up in a London periodical. The disclaimer on the article that accompanied the illustration made it clear that the drawing was the artists imagining of what the Nebraska Man may have looked like, even though the only anatomical evidence of its existence was a single molar. Osborn was very adamant that there was no way anyone could know what this newly discovered hominid could look like based on a single tooth and denounced the picture publicly. Many in England who saw the drawings were quite skeptical that a hominid had been discovered in North America. In fact, one of the primary scientists who had examined and presented the Piltdown Man hoax was vocally skeptical and said that a hominid in North America just did not make sense in the timeline of the history of life on Earth. After some time had passed, Osborn agreed that the tooth may not be a human ancestor, but was convinced it was at least a tooth from an ape that had branched off from a common ancestor as the human lines did. In 1927, after examining the area the tooth was discovered and uncovering more fossils in the area, it was finally decided the Nebraska Man tooth was not from a hominid after all. In fact, it was not even from an ape or any ancestor on the human evolution timeline. The tooth turned out to belong to a pig ancestor from the Pleistocene time period. The rest of the skeleton was found at the same site the tooth had originally come from and it was found to fit the skull. Even though Nebraska Man was a short lived missing link, it tells of a very important lesson to paleontologists and archaeologists working in the field. Even though a single piece of evidence looks to be something that could fit into a hole in the fossil record, it needs to be studied and more than one piece of evidence needs uncovered before declaring the existence of something that actually does not exist. This is a basic tenet of science where discoveries of a scientific nature must be verified and tested by outside scientists in order to prove its veracity. Without this checks and balances system, many hoaxes or mistakes will pop up and stall out the true scientific discoveries.

Emotional intelligence is the set of skills that underlie the accurate assessment, evaluation, expression, and regulation of emotions (Feldman, 2013, p. 385). The difference between the two is that practical intelligence is learned by observing people’s behaviors while emotional intelligence has to do with understanding other’s emotions.Emotional intelligence is the basis of empathy for self-awareness and social skills (Feldman, 2013, p. 385). These both can help you accomplish many things, especially if you are good with both. These both can help you really well when working. Just imagine you are a cashier register and a customer complains about a toothbrush by yelling and calling you bad names. If you are really good at both intelligences then you can deal with this in a calm and mature way. Ask the customer what is wrong with the toothbrush, if the customer keeps shouting at you then you know that you need to get the manager.If you have a low intelligence for both emotional and practical intelligence then you can get fired because you will start acting like the customer. Emotional intelligence can help in this situation by helping you understand what the person is really feeling by their body language, words and facial expressions. It can also help you by knowing how to calm down the customer enough so nothing bad happens by listening to what the customer says and talking in a calm and mature way. Practical intelligence can help because you will be good at observing the person’s behavior.If you are good at only one of these it may help but not as good as both would.
